The Andrews Labor Government has announced a suite of new measures to improve management of the Lower Yarra River. Responding to a report by the Lower Yarra River Use Future Directions Group on the future of the Lower Yarra River, Ms Neville said the Government will take immediate action to improve management of the waterway. This includes providing up to $2 million to Parks Victoria for the development of floating berths at Southgate Wharf, which is a priority for the future investment and growth in the commercial boating industry. Another $450,000 will be provided to Parks Victoria to establish and support a three person committee to advise on managing the Lower Yarra River and allocation of berths over the next two years. Parks Victoria will engage an independent expert to advise on strategy for commercial berth allocation and a probity officer to oversee the berth allocation process. The funding will also support a renewed focus on stakeholder engagement and collaboration in waterway management and additional staff to support this work as needed. The Labor Government’s support for the future of the Lower Yarra means it will remain a key feature that makes Melbourne one of the world’s most liveable cities.
